FRIENDS OF FLEGG

Former pupils, parents, staff and friends of the school sometimes wonder if there are ways of keeping in touch – whether to track down old acquaintances, to find out what is going on, or to offer help in a particular area.  There are several hundred ex-Flegg subscribers to the “Friends United” website, but we now have our own internet forum at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/flegghighschool  which anyone connected with the school is welcome to join free of charge.  There are already over fifty members.

Anyone interested in helping the school is warmly invited to support the “Friends of Flegg” association, set up last year by parents, staff and friends primarily to raise funds for important school projects which would otherwise fall by the wayside.  The group’s initial aim is to equip the magnificent – but empty – new Library and Resource Centre recently pictured in the Eastern Daily Press.

“This is a mighty big task that we have set ourselves,” says Julie Beales, the Friends’ Vice Chairperson; “we hope to raise £10,000 before September.  This money will help to provide furniture and fittings, but will more importantly buy books.”  Already the group has raised £900 through the Grand Raffle held on the October Open Day, and £250 from the January Quiz.  Soon there will be a disco for pupils, a book fair, another quiz and a summer fête.  Parents could be invited to present or sponsor books, and books signed by their authors might be obtained and auctioned.  The Friends hope to capitalize on the high prices now being paid for old metals, and anyone with surplus copper, brass, chrome, lead, stainless steel or aluminium (cans excepted) is urged to contact Helen (07884 061540) or Sarah (07951 820030) to have it collected.  Other ideas are in the pipeline, and the Friends would be delighted to receive suggestions and new members.  Please contact any of our officers at any time!
