School History
The return of Year 7 pupils to Flegg High after many years, together with the completion of our £6 million building programme, has been marked by the publication of a comprehensive history of secondary education in Martham and the surrounding villages. Roger Martin, who also wrote “Anthem of Bugles”, the story of Starehe Boys’ Centre in Nairobi, has traced the school’s development from its 14th century origins with a teacher licensed to educate twenty boys, through its establishment on our present site in 1964 and various changes in status, to its current role as a Foundation School and Business & Enterprise Specialist College with nearly a thousand pupils on roll. Much of the story derives from the personal recollections of the three Headteachers, Mr. London, Mr. Fuller and Mrs. Crowley, who have directed the school’s fortunes for the past forty years. There are vivid accounts of victories and disappointments, dreams and disasters, courageous decisions and exciting initiatives. The central theme is the flourishing spirit of enterprise enshrined in Flegg High’s specialist status, and the constant contribution of pupils, staff, parents, governors and local authority to the present success and high reputation of a remarkable school. “This is a splendid piece of local history: interesting, very readable, often amusing; even, at times, poignant.” (Dr. Francis Warner, Dean of Degrees, St. Peter’s College, Oxford.) The booklet features a fascinating photograph of Martham Secondary School in 1970, reproduced by kind permission from the collection of David Stretton. “Milestones and Memories” can be purchased at Reception for £3.50. Alternatively, please send a cheque or postal order for £4.15, to cover postage, to the School Office, Flegg High School, Somerton Road, Martham, Gt. Yarmouth NR29 4QD.
