The well-equipped computer room at Flegg |
Business FacultyThe Business Faculty oversees academic work in ICT, Mathematics, Technology and Business Studies. It also organises Work-Related Learning and Vocational Courses. It aims to develop an effective enterprise culture within the school, and to raise standards of participation and achievement in its subject areas. It is also engaged in establishing links with feeder schools and other high schools in the district, promoting numeracy and basic business skills. It is reaching out to the adult community through the offering of training and advisory services. Intended progress in these directions is set out in detail in the Flegg High School Business and Enterprise Specialist Status Summary Plan. The Summary PlanWithin the school, our objective is to enrich the curriculum by establishing a Business and Enterprise ethos, to increase pupil participation in Key Stage 4 business courses, and to achieve excellence in public examination results. To this end there will be induction days for feeder schools, business event and challenge days, a Careers Fair and special Option Evening for year 9, and a Business Experience Week with 'entrepreneur in residence' for year 10 pupils. GCSE candidates will be encouraged to sit for the Dual Award in Business Studies. Projects involving our pupils include the Young Enterprise scheme, Schools' Challenge, WHAM, Starwalker Bibs, the Kart Club, Fair Play and the HSBC School Bank. We hope to share our expertise with other schools, and we have already set up a number of partnerships with them. Special events will be offered to First Schools, designed to help teach young children the value of money and how to manage it. Between May and July, we shall host Business Days for Middle School pupils about to transfer, introducing key skills and generating enthusiasm for enterprise activity. Other High Schools will be helped to benefit from the materials and approaches developed for the Year 10 Business Experience Week. For the adult community, we propose to assist both existing small enterprises and individuals seeking new opportunities by providing a local training centre with appropriate courses, exhibitions and seminars. Accredited ICT courses will be offered, together with training related to job application, interview skills and the running of small businesses. Subject AreasAs a Business and Enterprise College, we are keen to ensure that an 'enterprising' ethos permeates the whole culture of our school. Within the Faculty, this translates into lessons which are more challenging to young people. The most inspiring lessons will create opportunities for our pupils to become innovative and use group work to build teamworking skills; they will contain problem-solving tasks requiring plenty of peer-to-peer interaction - and they will be fun. An 'enterprising' approach places young people 'in the driving seat'. |
