ARTThe first year of the GCSE course is concerned with the theme of Human Form. Objectives are to develop creative thought and skills in research, selection, drawing in the style of a chosen artist and the production of extended work. Pupils work in their own sketchbooks using collage, computer resources and a variety of drawing materials. They spend several weeks on their final painting or series of paintings, which will embody their experiences throughout the year. Assessment takes place through oral feedback, both individual and with the whole class. Year 11 pupils undertake the “Triptych Project”, which is largely devoted to the study of religious art. Additional objectives this year are to show an understanding of line, form, style and composition; to appreciate the differences between primary and secondary source material; to develop critical and analytical skills, together with improved drawing and painting techniques and artistic independence. After studying the history of triptych ideas and their symbology, pupils select a link with a proven artist and experiment with materials, composition and style. They then work out at least three different compositions and materials, and spend six weeks using the research in their sketchbooks to produce their final painting. Assessment is by oral feedback until the work is finished, when a grade will be awarded. |
